Sedona's Early Inhabitants

Sedona's history dates back to around 12,000 years ago when the Paleo-Indians first inhabited the area. These indigenous people were hunters and gatherers and have left behind petroglyphs and pictographs that can still be seen in the city's various rock formations. Later on, the Sinagua people, who were farmers, arrived in the area around 700 AD and built homes in the cliffs with rock walls and mud mortar. You can still see the ruins of their homes at the Palatki Heritage Site.

The name was changed when The Sedona Oak Creek Canyon Chamber of Commerce was established in 1951, and the members wanted to rename the city to something more appealing.
